  1. I honestly agree with the statement: " ...the ports have to work in order for Haiti to be able to export...produce." Haiti has the potential to be better and in order to move on Haiti needs a good government. Because the government makes decisions and if the government doesn't make good decisions, then all the good stuff that Haiti needs (electrical plant, better infrastructure, etc...) will not get done. Haiti needs a working government!

  3. Raymond Joseph Hatian Ambassador of the U.S basically implys there is about 83% of Haiti that loss their professionals. Which means they are lacking absortion(capicity). Haiti needs to find a way to work with the non-government officials to help recruit back those professionals. It is stated that 83% of Haiti's professionals move to the United States and Canada. So in order to convince these professionals to come back to Haiti and help rebuild their system, they would need the non-government organization to work with the Haitian government together and find a solution to help rebuild Haiti's foundation. I AGREE with this statement, but it is up to the non-government organization to stop criticizing the Hatian government so they do not have to hide anymore, and the Hatian government needs to be responsible for their role and stand up for their people immediately.

  4. Jeffrey Sachs Author, The End of Poverty

Jeffrey Sachs is questioning about how we can keep our focus on Haiti.Sachs is also stating that the United States should put the appropriate funds for rebuilding outside of the U.S. government into a professional institution. The U.S. will assign their financing to a professional organization outside of their day to day politics. The creation of a multi-donor trust fund would leverage the U.S. finances as well as leveraging thier interst. The International American Development Bank would govern the U.S. and have the participatioln of the government of Haiti as well. The steering committee would review the professional plan.

I disagree with the statement. I am a firm believer that the United States government should be part of the rebuilding of Haiti. We should not put them outside the U.S. government. However, I do agree that the International American Development Bank would benefit Haiti. Having a steering committee would benefit Haiti for building Haiti's agriculture.

  5. Paul Collier states "I think what is needed is a strong coordinating authority, which has to be haitian, plus a key international actor... There has to be some centralized authority that is Haitian plus international that can affect change both within Haiti and internationally, because its not just the international actors that have to be told what to do." I beleive that the international actors are already in place and addressing the situation globally, but the change that is still needed has to be addresed in Haiti. Haiti needs someone who will stand up and take action within communities while coordinating relief efforts internationally.

  6. My article is about ending poverty in Haiti. i agree with what the author was saying because he was basically saying that its going to be hard to keep the focus on Haiti and its economic downfalls. The US is trying to Haiti's 'best friend" in this but they have other things to focus on themselves. THe Inter-American Development Bank is trying make investments in Haiti. Haiti needs to figure out how to spend money wisely and think outside the box to help the country.

  8. Raymond Joesph Hatian Ambassador to the U.S maybe is right about the NGO's getting in the way of the real gov't organizations trying to rebuild back Haiti.HE said since there is a lack of government in the Haiti they are going to continue to do what they want because they see no help coming their way. They said they are not trying to work against the NGO's because they are doing good jobs but the fact that these NGO's cant rebulid roads, electricity and the water systems they need the real goverment organizations to come in and help so people can stop saying that the government is weak.

  9. The article is about Haiti and how to reconstruct it. William Easterly is basically saying that people can not help Haiti if there is no feed back. The system that has been created has no accountability. I agree with the statement because Haiti does need to be reconstructed and it cant if the aid that is given is only for relief and not to rebuild Haiti.

  10. I agree with the reading because we can only help haiti and we can't do everything for them but we can help. I agree that someone in their government needs to step up and help their people in their time of need. Haiti needs a good government.

  11. The article I had was an interview with Raymond Joseph of the Haitian Ambassador to the U.S. Joseph explains his concern of the low absorption capacity of Haiti. The low absorption capacity is the result of the fact that 83 percent of Haitian professionals are abroad. He believes if many of these professionals return to Haiti and invest in the Haitian’s community then it will help the government to move forward. Furthermore, he is concerned with the amount of NGOs in Haiti and the work they are actually doing. “There are 10,000 of them. We don’t know what they’re doing” Joseph said. He is aware that NGOs cannot build roads, electricity and the water system however; if they work closely with the Haitian government it can contribute to Haiti’s advancement. I agree with Joseph’s statements that Haitian professionals abroad should come back and invest into healthcare, education, community and so much more. Once Haitians leave Haiti, many of them don’t want to return and they work in foreign countries yet their countries are suffering. NGOs are helpful to Haiti however; I see it as an endless cycle. “Give a man a fish feed him for a day, teach him how to fish feed him for life.” If NGOs continue to hand food to Haiti then people won’t see the need to invest into their own country.

  12. In Mark Danner's "Beyond the Mountains", Danner talks about how Haiti's corrupt government has not stepped up into resolving the problems that the people are facing. He continues on by explaining how all the basic functions of the government that are to keep the people healthy, educated and build roads has been left in the hands of the aid community “which makes it increasingly easier for the money that goes to the government to be stolen”. Danner then shows an example of when government official (Jean- Claude Duvalier) made a decision without the people that ended up making matters worse. By him doing that not only did the Haitian society begin losing trust for Duvalier but also those of the foreign aid. Danner believes that “the past can’t be allowed to dominate the decision made now, because the decisions made now really could change the country, and the question is whether they will”, he then says that in order to rebuilt Haiti U.S would need to decentralize power and money so that the ones who actually work for money gets what they deserve. I agree with Danner’s argument because if powers and money was decentralized the people of Haiti could get what they work so hard for. The main issue in Haiti is its economic status and by setting limits could truly make a change that Haiti longs for.

  13. William Easterly Author, The White Man's Burden

The Author's state that Haiti is not the getting aids and it needs. The system of U.N. is lack of success in accomplishing other goals, including aiding Haiti. He suggested that people should try to fix the problems and bring Haiti back to what it used to be, rather than trying to create an investment. The author also point out one of the biggest issues that needs to be fix is that Haiti has an unstable economy and government.

I agree with this article. Aids for Haiti is still lacking. Also, Haiti should be aid but not getting over run by foreigners. They have the right to remain their tradition and cultural.
